One area, three names
If you have ever been confused about what to call this place, you are not alone. Gulzar e Hijri is the official name. KDA Scheme 33, or just Scheme 33, is what nearly everyone says. Safoora gets used for the Safoora Chowrangi end, though strictly that is one junction inside a much bigger scheme.
They all mean the same part of north east Karachi, bounded by Main University Road along the south, running back towards the Super Highway in the north, with Gulistan e Johar immediately next door.
Why people here hire a car and driver
There is no working mass transit. The Red Line bus corridor has been under construction along University Road, with a station planned at Safoora Chowrangi, and it has been under construction for a long time. Until it runs, this side of the city has no rapid transit at all. The Green Line is on the other side of Karachi entirely.
University Road has been the problem, not the solution. The scheme’s main artery has carried construction work and the traffic that comes with it. A driver who knows which parallel route is moving on a given morning is worth more here than almost anywhere else in the city.
The distances are deceptive. Scheme 33 looks close to things on a map. Saddar is 17 to 19 km, which sounds like half an hour and is regularly three quarters of an hour or more. Clifton is 24 to 26 km. The map lies and the traffic does not.
What Scheme 33 is genuinely well placed for
Two things, and both are worth knowing.
The airport. Jinnah International is roughly 9 to 11 km away, about 20 to 45 minutes depending on the road. That is a short airport run by Karachi standards. The motorway. Super Highway access sits roughly 6 to 8 km away, closer than from almost any other residential area we serve. A Hyderabad run, a drive to Gorakh Hill, or a trip north starts here without fighting across the city first. See city to city rental and winter road trips from Karachi.
If you live in Scheme 33 and you have been putting off an outstation trip because of the drive out, the drive out is the part you are closest to.
The hospital and university run
Scheme 33 holds a serious cluster of medical institutions: Dow University of Health Sciences at its Ojha Campus and Dow University Hospital on Suparco Road, Memon Medical Institute, and KIRAN Hospital. The University of Karachi and NED sit just along University Road.
That produces two bookings we take constantly.
Hospital collections, where the return time is unknown. A driver who waits is the whole point. You are not standing outside a hospital entrance at nine in the evening negotiating with an app.
Student and staff runs, usually monthly rather than daily. A fixed car and a fixed driver on a monthly plan costs less than the daily rate and removes the morning question entirely.
