Winter Road Trips from Karachi

By RentOnUs Team · 14 October 2026

Karachi’s season is the opposite of everyone else’s

The travel writing about Pakistan is all about the north, and the north is a summer destination. Naran, Hunza and Skardu are at their best between May and September, and much of that region becomes difficult or impossible once the passes start closing.

Karachi runs the other way. Between October and February the coast is pleasant, the Sindh interior is bearable, and the drives that would be punishing in June become the best thing about living here. That window has just opened.

Six trips, shortest first.

1. Thatta and Keenjhar Lake, 100 km, 2 hours

The easy one. Makli necropolis is one of the largest funerary sites in the world, Shah Jahan Mosque is extraordinary, and Keenjhar Lake makes a straightforward lunch stop on the way back.

Vehicle: anything. A Toyota Corolla GLi or Honda City at PKR 5,000 is plenty. Shape of the day: leave at 8, back by 6.

2. Hyderabad, 160 km, 3 hours

Straightforward motorway running. Worth it for the food more than the sights, and an easy introduction to outstation travel if you have not done it before. See Karachi to Hyderabad.

Vehicle: any sedan. The Corolla Altis at PKR 6,000 if you want the quieter cabin.

3. Ranikot Fort, 200 km, 4 hours

The Great Wall of Sindh, and the largest fort in the world by perimeter. The approach road is rough in places and the site itself is enormous, so you want clearance and you want a full day.

Vehicle: Honda BR-V at PKR 7,000 at minimum. A Fortuner or Prado at PKR 15,000 if the group is larger.

4. Hingol National Park and Kund Malir, 240 km, 5 hours

Mud volcanoes, the Princess of Hope, and a beach that photographs better than anywhere else within reach of the city. Doable in a very long day, far better as an overnight.

Vehicle: SUV. The side tracks to the beach are soft sand. Note: no fuel and no signal for long stretches. Fill up at Hub.

5. Gorakh Hill, 400 km, 7 hours

The one that surprises people. It sits at around 5,700 feet in the Kirthar range and genuinely drops near freezing in winter, which is not a sentence most people associate with Sindh.

The final climb is steep, narrow and unsealed. This is the one trip on the list where the vehicle is not a comfort decision.

Vehicle: 4x4 only. Fortuner, Prado or Land Cruiser V8. Shape of the trip: overnight. Do not attempt the climb in the dark.

6. The Makran coast to Gwadar, 630 km, 9 hours

The big one, and only sensible in winter. Covered properly in Karachi to Gwadar by road.

Vehicle: Prado or Land Cruiser V8. Shape of the trip: two to four days, broken at Kund Malir or Ormara.

Two things that catch people out

Winter is also wedding season. October to February is when the SUVs go first, because the same vehicles that suit a road trip are the ones booked for baraat. If your trip is on a weekend in this window, book two to three weeks ahead. See wedding car rental for why that pressure exists.

The driver matters more on these routes than in the city. Gorakh and the Makran coast are not roads to learn on. Every booking includes a driver who has run the route, which on a narrow unsealed climb is the whole point.

Booking

Outstation trips are quoted as one figure covering the vehicle, driver, fuel, tolls and the driver’s stay where it runs overnight. Send your dates and group size on WhatsApp.
