Karachi to Gwadar by Road
By RentOnUs Team · 14 October 2026
The drive nobody expects
Most people in Karachi have never driven west. The road south to Hyderabad is familiar, the motorway north even more so, but the Makran Coastal Highway runs along a coastline that looks like nowhere else in the country: mud volcanoes, the Hingol river cutting through rock, the Princess of Hope standing by the roadside, and long empty stretches where the Arabian Sea sits on your left for hours.
It is roughly 630 km to Gwadar, about 9 hours of driving before you stop for anything. This is what the trip actually involves.
The route
The highway runs west out of Karachi through Hub, then follows the coast.
| Point | Approx. distance from Karachi | Why stop |
|---|---|---|
| Hub | 40 km | Last easy fuel and supplies before the quiet stretch |
| Hingol National Park | 190 km | Mud volcanoes, the Hingol river, Princess of Hope |
| Kund Malir | 240 km | The beach most people come for. A common overnight point |
| Ormara | 380 km | Turtle beach and a natural harbour. The usual halfway halt |
| Pasni | 500 km | Fishing town, worth an hour |
| Gwadar | 630 km | Hammerhead, Koh e Batil, the port |
Most groups do not drive it in one day. Karachi to Kund Malir is a comfortable half day, and splitting there or at Ormara turns a long slog into a proper trip.
Which vehicle
The highway is sealed, so this is not an off road expedition. The vehicle choice is about comfort over nine hours and clearance on the side tracks down to the beaches.
- Toyota Prado or Toyota Fortuner, PKR 15,000 a day. The sensible default. Seven seats, high clearance, and a cabin that stays comfortable for a long day.
- Toyota Land Cruiser V8, PKR 22,000 a day. For larger groups or where the extra comfort over distance is worth it.
- Toyota HiAce grand cabin, PKR 10,000 a day. Thirteen seats if you are travelling as a group and staying on the sealed road.
A sedan will physically make the journey, but we do not recommend one. The side tracks at Kund Malir and Ormara are soft sand and loose gravel, and that is where the trip actually happens.
What to plan for
Fuel. Fill in Hub and again at Ormara. The gaps between stations are long, and the ones in between are not guaranteed to have stock.
Signal. Expect long stretches with no coverage. Agree a plan before you lose it rather than after.
Daylight. Start early. Driving this road after dark means you miss the reason for coming and you lose your margin if anything goes slowly.
Accommodation. Kund Malir is huts and camping rather than hotels. Gwadar has proper hotels. Book ahead in winter, which is the season everyone travels.
Conditions. This is a remote road through Balochistan, and the situation on it changes. Check the current advisories before you commit, and tell us your plan when you book so the driver can plan around it. For foreign nationals an NOC is often required, and that needs sorting well in advance.
When to go
October to February. The coast is pleasant in winter and brutal the rest of the year. July and August bring the monsoon, which can close sections of the road entirely.

How we price it
Outstation trips are quoted as one figure covering the vehicle, the driver, fuel, tolls and the driver’s stay. Not a day rate with extras added at the other end.
Tell us your dates, how many people, and whether you want to break the journey or push through. See city to city rental for how outstation booking works, or send the plan on WhatsApp and we will price the whole trip.
